Why does Beverly's sig say "first" before "do no harm"? Does she have to remind herself or something?

What's not shown is "Second, kill anyone who tries to usurp amazing Doctor powers."

"First Do No Harm" is from the hippocratic oath. Or rather, sort of... but it's the first tennament of medicine. It's the medical prime directive.

To paraphrase Doctor McCoy, "It's a saying you green bloooded vulcan!"

Yeah, it's basically a thing so that doctors don't hurt a patient who is currently functioning. Shown quite well in Ethics. That's why she has such a problem with the whole procedure with replacing Worf's spinal column and whatnot. He's functioning, he can live with the paralysis, etc. But if they did the surgery, he could die. And that sort of breaks the tenant.

Yeah, but usually the "first" part is omitted because it isn't really necessary; a doctor would just say something like "my duty is to do no harm." I just think it looks a little weird. ;)

from Wikipedia:

It is a common misconception that the phrase primum non nocere, "First, do no harm" is included in the Hippocratic Oath. It is not, but seems to have been derived indirectly from his Epidemics, in which he wrote, "Declare the past, diagnose the present, foretell the future; practice these acts. As to diseases, make a habit of two thingsā€”to help, or at least to do no harm."

Yeah, that "First" seems to be implied in there with the "at least". Strange how things get turned around like that. I knew I'd read parts of the hippocratic oath before - with several experiences stuck in a hospital situation and feeling like doctors weren't following it, I looked into it. LOL.

Any chance for a WOK Kirk banner at some point?

Oh yeah, at some point. Just a matter of when that point is, heh. ;)

:thumbsup2:

I'm not sure what the deal is about suggesting certain ideas, (so if i'm out of line, then I apologize) but is there any chance of getting a new BSG signature with just Starbuck?

Suggestions are always welcome, and always written down for later, heh. It just may take a while before they're seen. ;)

You're totally out of line. We're going to have to ban you.

Oh, and you're far too obsessed with Starbuck. :P

Taking every chance to abuse your power, eh?

I know. It's really unhealthy too, but as I always say, if you're going to be obsessed with something, then you might as well push it as far as you can. :loopy:

As my 7th grade english teacher once pointed out when some classmates said I was too obsessed with Star Trek,

"There are far worse things someone could be obsessed with."

First new one in a long while...

(I blame Doctor_Odd, he set a bad example for poor Klaus by running off on his sailboat. :P)
