I just want to say (as my first post) that this is such a refreshing discussion. I'm happy to find a group of like-minded trekkies. I posted something similar to the Star Trek subreddit and, well, let's just say it wasn't very well received... To me, this is what Star Trek is about, ever since Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov were on the same bridge, working together as a team with Kirk, Spock, etc. And while, as some of you have pointed out, sexism and racism aren't dead, there are still underrepresented minorities that deserve to be a part of the Star Trek canon! I'm part of the LGBT community myself, and as long as the character was not a stereotype, I'd very much appreciate if the new show finally gave us a nod.
