And many have lived to regret it, as Trump's low approval rating shows.

  4. Yay! Little one is on a sleep-over at the daycare... should be a relaxing night if everything goes well...

  5. Hm. A $15 million dollar bomb to kill 36 terrorists? Doesn't sound terribly efficient. Well, anyway we must spend 2% of the GDP on the army (and no, the costs of hosting refugees does not count).

    1. Sehlat Vie

      Sehlat Vie

Kind of like using a photon torpedo to kill a few gophers in one's backyard, isn't it?

That bomb was one of 20, and was very very expensive.   Yet we can't afford the Meals on Wheels program (just one of those bombs could fund MOW for a LONG time...).

Speaking of efficient, how about 57 Tomahawk cruise missiles to so horribly brutalize an airfield the Syrians can use it the next day?

Yeah, this is money printing for the arming industry, with the side effect for PR for the commander in chief. Did someone say "military-industrial complex"...? :P And yeah, of course the NATO allies are required to spend 2% of their GDP, too ... on American arms, otherwise Trump will sell them to Russia. No matter how much they spent on easing the consequences of American wars, such as refugee streams (after all, that money doesn't go into the pockets of the arms manufacturers). America first! No idea if that's too much of a conspiracy theory, but ... naw. War has to pay off, otherwise it wouldn't be started. And paying off means for those who hold the power. America is an oligarchy.

  6. Exit poll for the Dutch election: Right-wing populists of Islam-hater Wildersnmuch weaker than expected! (Only 19 out of 150 seats!) Yay!

At least Germany is wise enough to dodge the populist wave.

Well, the Netherlands, for the time being... hope Germany will be too, in September.

You will.  The Dutch have, and I'm guessing the rest of Europe will wake up and see the misery left in the Brexit/Trump wake...

  7. "Westworld" now available on Amazon Germany! Yay! Guess I'm going to start watching tonight! :)

Enjoy, but remember it's a slow burn... it's not the kind of show that spoon feeds its audiences answers in one sitting.

      **** Not Quite a Spoiler, But... *****

But stay with it to the S1 finale and a LOT of things will be clearer.

Actually, I saw the season finale while I was working. It was showing on the tv at my hotel, so I know how it ends without knowing what happened before hand. lol

  9. Hitler. Hitler, Hitler, Hitler, Hitler!!! What are you looking at me? All this political correctness, you're not even allowed to say what's on your mind. Never heard of free speech? Hitler!

  10. Yay! All six Star Trek shows (including TAS) are now available on Netflix Germany. The ship's ready for Discovery! =)

  11. Happy new years! I know most of you are still in 2016, but hey, there is not much time left for  that shitty year! I'm glad it's over...

  12. Holidays! Finally.

  13. When a truck runs into a Christmas market in Berlin, 12 people are killed and 50 wounded. Reasons are still unclear, but officials say clues are pointing in a terrorist direction. Thoughts go to the victims and their relatives. My family was not affected, but a friend of mine was at the site (he was about watching Rogue One at a nearby theatre); I've heard just enough from him to know he wasn't directly hurt, but nothing beyond that.

Thank you, Sehlat. I haven't heard anything more from my friend, so I guess he is too shaken to reply at the moment. But I'm glad to know he at least wasn't wounded or worse.

    3. Sehlat Vie

      Sehlat Vie

His campaign was about as toxic as agent orange, that's for sure.   Though the more I read, the more I'm thinking much of that was just B/S and blustering chest-thumping to get the job (or to shake up the system).  Now comes the moment of truth, and it looks like he's going to defer to the 'swamp' he was vowing to drain (former rivals whom he mericlessly made fun of during the campaign) and lead as a prima donna figure head.   We'll see...

Thanks! :) It's a windows machine, as I'm a dual user... I prefer Mac for notebooks, but Windows for desktops. My old desktop was going to be 10 years old by Christmas... so it really was high time, although I upgraded a couple of times. But there comes a time when additional RAM or a new video card don't suffice anymore...

I know what you mean, we got a new windows 10 last Christmas and have not looked back.

      However

      mobile needs updating

  19. After two weeks in my new school (formation as pharmaceutical assistant), I'm amazed, highly motivated and really happy to finally get out again. Looks like a great kind of profession! May the "Breaking Bad" jokes start now! :P Plus I take 20km by bicycle per day, which is a lot of fun ... :)

The new occupation (looked it up, it's actually called "pharmaceutical technician" in English) really makes me feel like rewatching "Breaking Bad". Guess I'm going to start tonight. :)

  20. TOS is available on Netflix Germany now... let's see when the other shows will follow. :)

  21. Yay! "Ash vs. The Evil Dead" available for free on Amazon Prime Germany now! :D

  22. Got a brand new bicycle today. The first ride from the shop back home (ca. 5km) was amazing! :) I love cycling so much, I now wonder how I could do without it for almost a decade ... From Thursday on, I plan on cycling to my new school every day, 8km (ca. 5 miles I guess) to get there, and another back. That should make me fit again! :)

    1. Sehlat Vie

      Sehlat Vie

      Good for you!!

I'm a slave to my home Exercycle (an hour a day, every day; otherwise I get stiff and sore).   But it'd be nice to have a bike that actually goes somewhere...

    2. Sim

      Sim

Yes, you should try that! When you've been practizing at home, you should be well prepared.

It's great fun! I just did a test ride to my future school ... took the wrong way here and there, so it was more than 9km to get there ... and then again 9km back. That was more sports for me today than in the years before ... and it feels really good. :)

    3. Sehlat Vie

      Sehlat Vie

It's been a LONG time since I've ridden a real bike (motorized or otherwise...hehe).   And given my somewhat more 'fragile' state these days (lots of pins and screws in my old body), I'd best not tempt fate.   But I will continue to dedicate myself to my daily workout (and when I can't do that, I walk).

  23. No summer in Berlin this year. We directly jumped from June to October: Hardly ever above 20°C, lots of rain, weather like in October ever since July. *sigh*

My wife would probably hate it. She hates summer. Whenever temperatures rise above 25°C, she starts bitching ... but I really love the usual 3 or 4 weeks above 30°C per year, it isn't quite the same "holiday feeling" without it for me.

    3. Sehlat Vie

      Sehlat Vie

Now imagine 30C... year round.  ;)

    4. Sim

Give me sunglasses, light hippie dress, a bench at the beach, enough money for cocktails and perhaps a reefer, and I'm in... dude. ;)

Which reminds me ... I got to rewatch "The Big Lebowski" again soon...

  24. An ex-girlfriend from 9 years ago contacted me this week, just to tell me how sorry she feels about how she treated me back then. Wow. As far as I can tell, no selfish motives on her side... neither seeking forgiveness for self-satisfaction, nor trying to get me back after a failed relationship, just the honest wish to be decent. Amazing. It doesn't happen often that you get the chance to speak with a ghost from the past again to find closure; great woman, I have to say.

Thank you, Sehlat! Life is too short for grudges... but in her case, I never had one in the first place. It was hard when she withdrew from me, yes, but I felt even back then that her feelings had been honest, and she had a lot of baggage to carry. I didn't take it personally. And although I wondered if I had just been naive... her saying "hello" now confirms I wasn't. She indeed had been honest.

And I noticed my good feelings for her haven't changed, just faded over the years. When I learned about her bad experiences since then, I was relieved to notice I didn't feel the slightest satisfaction, just sympathy.

It's still in me, and that's good to know. I'm glad she showed me that.

(Oh, and she's the one I mentioned a couple of weeks ago in some thread here. She really didn't have an easy way.)

    3. Sehlat Vie

When you feel sympathy instead of gloating?  That's a sign you've REALLY moved on.  :)

I had something like that happen to me some years ago from someone I dated decades ago. It was nice to have a prettier bow to close that chapter of my life.

  25. Trump, Putin, Le Pen, AFD, PIS-Party, Erdogan, Brexit ... what is wrong with these people? They're detroying all my plans of living in the 90s forever. I resent them for it and take it personally. ;)

    1. Sehlat Vie

      Sehlat Vie

I would've been happy with a 21st century that actually had something wondrous, instead of Brexit, global terrorism, and a blustery, ignorant reality TV star for a US presidential candidate.

But maybe DSC will at least make great comments on our times. Looking forward to it! =)
